Our students have been busy this summer! A few of them were kind enough to share some highlights from their summer experiences.ย

Bukola Emi-Johnson (MS Student in Statistics)

๐Ÿ’ผ This summer, Bukola worked for Syngenta, one of the worldโ€™s leading agricultural companies, as an IT and Digital Intern.

๐Ÿšœ Bukola created an innovative data dashboard to show insights into grower data throughout the planting season, empowering users to detect interesting patterns that raw numbers on their own would not show.

๐Ÿ“ฃ To other students and early career folks, Bukola recommends being “prepared to learn new tools on the job, as real-world scenarios often require adaptability and self-study.” Awesome job, Bukola!

Cassandra Hung (BA Student in Statistics)

๐Ÿ’ผ This summer, Cassi was an Undergraduate Researcher at the University of Michigan’s Big Data Summer Institute (BDSI).

๐Ÿ”ฌ Cassi collaborated with other undergraduate researchers to investigate associations in lung cancer patient metadata based on multiplex imaging data using spatial statistics and a clustering algorithm.

๐Ÿ“ฃ To other students and early career folks, Cassi says “There are lots of ways to find out about summer programs, and I find it very helpful to talk to professors and other students early to learn about different opportunities and how to apply to them!” Way to go, Cassi!

Esther Jiang (BS Student in Applied Statistics)

๐Ÿ’ผ This summer, Esther spent her summer interning at Swiss Re, one of the world’s leading providers of reinsurance and insurance!

๐Ÿ’ป For other students, Esther recommends taking upper-level statistics courses and learning multiple coding languages.

๐ŸŽจ Esther also shared that her internship taught her that “working with datasets often requires creative thinking.” We totally agree!

Grayson Weavil (BS Student in Statistics)

๐Ÿ’ผ This summer, Grayson attended the Collaborative Undergraduate Biostatistics Experience (CUBE) at the University of Virginia!

๐Ÿง  Grayson worked with clinical researchers in neuroscience and psychology to investigate the role of trust in the relationship between social behaviors and negative mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety and alcoholism.

๐Ÿ’ช She cleaned data, created data visualizations, developed a statistical analysis plan, ran statistical tests, analyzed results, and ultimately produced a statistical summary report, oral and poster presentation. Wow!
